Old Bullard Just Became Stonegate's Grown-Up Strip, and the French Quarter Took the Kids

Drive Paluxy this month and you'll pass at least four storefronts that didn't exist in January. That's not unusual for South Tyler, which adds new construction the way most towns add potholes. What's unusual is the pattern. Most new spots within a few minutes of Stonegate's gate are geared toward adult evenings. The Duckling Village offers child-focused play on Paluxy, while a family dining and arcade destination is taking shape farther over, on Broadway, at a shopping center that saw tenant departures over the past year.

If you live in Stonegate and you've been picking restaurants by whichever new sign catches your eye, you've probably already sensed this without naming it. Here's what's actually going on, block by block.

Old Bullard Road Filled In, and Not With Kid Stuff

The stretch of Old Bullard Road closest to Stonegate picked up two new tenants this year, and neither one is chasing the minivan crowd.

The Brass Tap opened at 5875 Old Bullard Road, Suite 500, an upscale craft beer bar with more than 45 rotating taps, a full lineup of craft cocktails, wine, and what the owners call a neighborhood pub menu. The happy hour structure tells you who they're aiming for: the Early Edition runs weekdays from 2 to 6 p.m., the Overtime Edition runs 9 to 11 p.m. every night, and first responders get 10 percent off their whole check every Monday with a valid ID. That's a bar built around people getting off work, not a place with a kids' menu.

A few doors down, Lalo's Mexican Grill & Cantina opened in May at 5106 Old Bullard Road, taking over the former Mojo's space. The owners had spent three years building a following with Lalo's Mexican Dogos, known for bacon-wrapped hot dogs and asada fries. The new location keeps those originals but adds a full dine-in menu with fajitas, steaks, enchiladas, and margaritas. It's the same family, a genuinely bigger bet, and it's a sit-down restaurant with a bar, not a counter-service taco stand.

Neither business is a chain testing the market. Both are locally connected, both landed within a quarter mile of each other, and both are built for an evening out rather than a quick pickup on the way home.

A Child-Focused Option on Paluxy

The Duckling Village opened at 8336 Paluxy Drive in the Paluxy Place Shopping Center, and on paper it breaks the pattern: it's an indoor play space built specifically for children ages 0 to 11, with a miniature village of themed storefronts including a bakery, a market, a post office, and a veterinary clinic.

It's locally owned, adding to the mix of locally connected businesses around Stonegate. The Duckling Village offers drop-in play for children, a different kind of outing from a restaurant or an arcade. Its presence on Paluxy adds a child-focused option near Stonegate, alongside the restaurants on Old Bullard and the family dining and arcade taking shape on Broadway.

Meanwhile, Broadway Is Rebuilding Around Kids

Cross over to 4526 S. Broadway Avenue and the French Quarter Shopping Center is going through a different kind of transition. Ken's Pizza closed out of that space, and a Pizza Ranch franchise, the first in Tyler, is converting it into an 11,435-square-foot restaurant and arcade. The build is a $500,000 job that was slated to run from April 1 through a September 1 completion, which means if you haven't driven past the French Quarter lately, the arcade lights may already be on.

Pizza Ranch has been around since 1981, founded in Hull, Iowa, and its format leans hard into family dining: pizza, chicken wings, and now, at this location, enough arcade floor space to make it a genuine weekend stop rather than a quick dinner run. That's a different bet than anything happening on Old Bullard. It's a center repositioning itself around kids with energy to burn, not adults looking for a second round of drinks.

The Split, Laid Out

The Loop 323 corridor is worth a mention even though it's outside the immediate Stonegate radius. Smalls Sliders had its grand opening there on March 10, handing out free sliders to the first hundred customers, and it fits the same drive-thru, thirty-minute logic as most of what's landed on that stretch this year. It's useful to know about, but it's not competing for the same evening as the Brass Tap or Lalo's. It's a different kind of trip entirely.

What This Means for an Actual Stonegate Weekend

If you're picking a spot for a Tuesday dinner without the kids, Old Bullard now gives you two real options within a few minutes of the gate, where a year ago you had neither. The Brass Tap works if you want to sit at the bar with more than 45 taps to choose from. Lalo's works if you want a table, a margarita, and a menu that's bigger than it was three years ago.

If you're planning a Saturday with kids who need to run around, the Pizza Ranch arcade on Broadway will be an option once it is fully open. The Duckling Village offers drop-in play for younger children, while the arcade will offer a different kind of family outing.

That's the actual shift. It's not that South Tyler got busier, everyone already knew that. It's that the new venues offer different kinds of outings in different parts of town: adult dining on Old Bullard, drop-in play on Paluxy, and a family dining-and-arcade destination taking shape on Broadway. That pattern emerged over the first eight months of this year.

None of this changes what Stonegate is. It's still the same gated 170-acre community off Paluxy with its own 16-acre spring-fed lake and more than two miles of internal walking trails, still quiet, still set apart from the corridor doing all this new construction.
